Former Pure Metal Recycling/Acme Refining executive and sales team members join Universal Scrap Metals, Inc. (USM) newest subsidiary, Base Metals Group, LLC.
CHICAGO, January 2016 – Universal Scrap Metal, Inc. (USM) is proud to announce Base Metals Group, LLC as a new subsidiary to its list of synergetic recycling companies. BMG will be operating out of USM’s Alsip, IL location.
With former Pure Metal Recycling/Acme Refining VP of Sales and 25 year veteran Mike O’Malley at the helm, joined by a talented team of executive, sales and administrative professionals from the now the defunct Pure Metal Recycling, Base Metals Group will continue to exemplify their expertise of extraordinary customer relations to complement USM’s 50 years of experience, well designed infrastructure and solid reputation in the industry.

Universal Scrap Metals (USM) Acquires Leading Chicago
Specialty Metals and Alloys Recycler Charter Trading Ltd.
Chicago, January 2015 . . . Universal Scrap Metals (USM), a leader in the recycling of scrap metals, has announced its acquisition of Charter Trading, Ltd., a leading Chicago recycler of industrially generated specialty metals, from high temperature alloy scrap to stainless steel, tungsten carbide, molybdenum and nickel, titanium and cobalt alloys. The acquisition will create USM’s newest division, USM Charter Alloys, adding extensive alloy recycling capability to the ferrous, non-ferrous, copper, electronic and composite scrap recycling that it currently conducts. The entire Charter Trading workforce will also join USM Charter Alloys, enabling it to continue Charter Trading’s long-standing tradition of excellent customer service and quality.

BLH Computers Welcomes Our New Store in Alsip, Illinois
We are pleased to announce BLH Computers has opened a new store in Alsip, IL. This building is located on the north side of the USM Recycling facility in Alsip, Illinois. We were thrilled to have Alsip Mayor Patrick Kitching and representatives from the Alsip Chamber of Commerce attend the event.
The Grand Opening was on April 20, 2013, in conjunction with Earth Day Weekend. BLH Computers and USM held Earth Day collection events at 11 locations during the week of Earth Day. Seven event locations were in Chicago and the northern suburbs, the northwest suburbs and the southern suburbs. The other four event locations were at the Central Illinois BLH Computer locations: Springfield, Taylorville, Jacksonville and Decatur. Universal Scrap Metals Announces Expansion in Kentucky
In 2013, Chicago-based USM, one of North America’s largest wholesalers and processors of scrap metal, continued their impressive growth by announcing the expansion of its operations to include a recycling facility in Georgetown, Ky. USM’s investment includes purchasing state-of the-art recycling equipment from Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corporation (ABRC),. This equipment is used to help prepare used beverage containers for processing at aluminum smelting facilities. ABRC has a long relationship with USM and is fully supportive of their continuing efforts to expand this facility and their business.
Operating under the name USM Alumacycle, the deal is a group investment between parent company USM, Inc., USM Processing, Ltd., and USMe, LLC. “I’m excited to see USM’s aggressive growth strategy continue,” said USM Alumacycle President, Jason Zeid. “This recycling facility in Kentucky will expand USM’s already vast aluminum processing capability and allow us to service more customers in the south.” Click to view full story.
USM Acquires Premier Metal Recycling
In 2012, USM, Inc acquired Premier Metals Recycling, one of the Midwest’s largest processors of scrap copper. This latest acquisition enhances USM’s extensive copper recycling capability to the ferrous, non-ferrous, electronic and composite scrap recycling conducted by its five companies: USM, USM Processing, USM Recycling, USMe and BLH Computers. USM Processing Recognized for Outstanding Safety Performance
USM Processing Chicago, has proven to everyone’s satisfaction that you can be a highly productive, fast-paced scrap metal wholesaler/processor and do it safely. In a recent ceremony, Wausau Insurance Companies recognized the outstanding performance of Universal’s employees for safely completing 500,300 work hours over three and a half years. The accomplishment is recognized in a plaque displayed in the lobby of Universal’s 180,000 square foot headquarters facility. Universal operates another smaller facility in Alsip, Illinois. Hesitant at first, managers were pleased to see workers begin to remind each other about safety precautions and gear. Persistence and constant reinforcement seem to be paying off. “We’ve all been together a lot of years. If one of us gets hurt, we all feel it.”
Alcoa Recycling 2004 Preferred Supplier Award
In 2004, USM Processing won the Preferred Supplier Award from Alcoa Recycling. The Alcoa Supplier Awards showcase the best companies which are consistently high quality suppliers and demonstrate reliable business production efforts. The preferred supplier award is given to those companies that demonstrate superior quality, dependability and excellent business methods.
Presidential Award for Outstanding UBC Quality
In 2000, USM Processing won the Presidential Award for Outstanding UBC (Used Beverage Cans) Quality. The Alcoa UBC Supplier Quality Awards spotlight the importance of high quality UBCs in the remelting process and in eliminating potential hazards for employees. The elimination of contaminants from UBC shipments has a direct impact on the quality and cost of recycled aluminum cans as well as the safety of employees.
